6/07/06 Trading Paint - Risks of Busch
Jerry, I get what you’re saying about the risks that Cup stars like Tony Stewart take by racing in the Busch Series, but it seems to me that your wrath would serve the racing community better if focused on the real culprits here. SMI and Goodyear took a perfectly imperfect track and ruined it while searching for perfection. I would also offer that racing at Lowe’s in and of itself poses more of a risk to drivers than the remaining Busch Series schedule does.
I for one love drivers like Stewart and Robby Gordon, multiple-disciplined racers giving their all. Harkens back to guys like Mario, Foyt and Fangio. You sound like a lawyer, Jerry, worried about protecting the cold, corporate investment. Remember passion, Jerry? It’s what built motorsports, what attracts us to it, keeps us involved. Trade that for security – security! – in motorsports, no less, and you’re left with a shallow, empty marketing platform.
I think Gibbs gets Tony, understands that he’s a racer. If Gibbs were worried about his Cup drivers getting injured in Busch, he would have banned it when Bobby Labonte busted his shoulder a few years back in Darlington. I don’t see Gibbs standing in Tony’s way, at least until they return to Lowe’s in October.
