6/15/06 Trading Paint - Scientology and NASCAR
Jerry, don’t you love the idea of Scientology in NASCAR? I do. It will finally force the heads of this sport to face the ideological quandary they’re in. I have long been in favor of dropping the prerace invocation and its references to “in Jesus’ name, Amen,” and I see the Scientologist movement forcing the hand of NASCAR in this regard. It’s amazing to me that this sport has grown so much, yet it can’t seem to separate itself from the Christian Right.
Like I’ve always said, diversity is more than skin color. If NASCAR can’t be inclusive of other ideologies, even something as fringe as Scientology, then they should get out of that business altogether and skip right ahead to the national anthem. They may be surprised to find it as liberating as dropping big tobacco. Daring you to address this.
