Australia and the motorsports world lost a great yesterday when racing legend Peter Brock, the master of Bathurst, was killed in a rallying accident. He was 61.

A multi-time champion in Australian touring cars and a master of the exciting track at Mt. Panorama, Brock was known throughout Australia as a motorsports icon, starring in commercials and television shows. His nine wins in Australia’s premiere touring car race, now known as the Bathurst 1000, is a record.

Americans probably don’t know much of Brock or this mighty track. I have seen a race there on Speed Channel a few years back, and this track looks to be quite spectacular. The downhill run to the long back straightaway has to be one of the most thrilling rides in motorsport. To think that Peter Brock was the dominant force at this awesome track speaks volumes about his skill and daring. I salute him and his contributions to motorsport.
