I had a Facebook status argument today, and I couldn’t understand this woman on the other end. She was steadfastly holding to the point of view that the problems we are in are the result of the Democrats that have had control of Congress since 2007.
What? First of all, you had a Facebook status argument? How weird is that? Pretty weird.
Anyway, to my point, which is this: You had Republican nirvana – a President, a Congress and a post 9/11 mandate from the populace. Under these conditions, the Republicans were able to enact, without opposition, all of their long-held projects and dream scenarios. Technologically driven, pre-emptive war “on the cheap”? Check. Surveillance of the public without warrant? Check? Privatization of the military and schools at taxpayer’s expense? Check. Deregulation of the financial and energy sectors? Check. Political appointments to supposedly apolitical positions within the DOJ? You bet. Scuttling and circumvention of America’s participation in long held international treaties and organizations such as the Geneva Convention and the United Nations? Bingo. That’s just the surface. All of these things were the Republican wet dream, and under this administration and the Republican Congress that served it for the first 6 years, they got their way on every point. And you know what?
Each and every one of those ideals, those long-held philosophies, were dead wrong. Each and everyone of them was tested in a real world situation, with full support of this nation, and each and every one of them fell flat. They are misguided and ill-conceived. They are, like those who developed them, painfully wrong.
That was the beauty of the mandate the Bush administration had post 9/11. They were given enough rope to hang themselves, and they tied the knot, picked out the chair and kicked it out all on their own.
Now the Rush/O’Reilly set, who seem to put team over country whenever they get the chance, are going to point the fingers at Nancy Pelosi and blame the Democratic Congress that went into session in January of 2007. They will villify Congress as a whole, conveniently forgetting that they had control of this entity not only for the vast majority of the Bush administration, but for six years prior to that as well. They conveniently forget that it is their party who strived for half a century to get control of both the Executive and Legislative Branches of our government, and when they wrapped their hands around this absolute power they started two wars, rolled back parts of the US Constitution as they saw fit and oversaw the biggest financial collapse our country has seen since 1929.
And they want to blame the Dems? You mean the party that has had control of both Congress and the Presidency for exactly TWO years since 1980? Ok, sure.
The legacy of the Republican Party, as Republicans see it, is as the party of Lincoln. I feel that ol’ Abe wouldn’t recognize this party as it stands today, with it’s hipocracy and recent legacy of malfeasance. The worst the Democrats in this century can claim is ineffectiveness, or more recently, infidelity. Republicans have the blood of Hoover, McCarthy, Nixon and now George W. Bush on their histories. But like those Republicans that screwed up the country before, this terrible President will be followed by a gifted Democrat whose charge is to clean up the mess left by his Republican predecessor.
And in order for that to happen, the Republican’s who supported this failed administration over the past eight years, those who voted for Bush not only once but twice, need to do three things for the sake of their country: Sit down, shut up and let someone else drive for a while.
